Little Pend Oreille NWR: Initial Survey ...
The refuge was established as “refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife”. The refuge Habitat Management Plan (HMP) list 27 bird species as Resources of Concern and Focal Species (See table 2 for a list of these). Much of the refuge management involves aspects of forest restoration and the provision of habitat for migratory birds. Trends in the various bird species are an important measure of the successfulness of those efforts. The objective of this survey is to identify trends and relative abundance of several bird species during the breeding season. Point count locations were selected based on monitoring a variety of forest habitats and field habitats both in and out of restoration project areas. One transect was placed adjacent to the Dailey Lake wetland area. Transects are visited every other year due to staffing limitations.
